The country's gem, our most beautiful county...

Villány is Hungary's southernmost wine region. It is unique because, due to it sub-mediterranean climate, more grapes can achieve ripeness that aren't able to do so elsewhere, or at least not to this degree. The whole wine region consists of about 2000 hectares of vineyards. In about 90% of this, red grape varieties are grown. It's most famous areas are the Kopár-Dűlő, Remete-Dűlő, Ördögárok, Jammertal, and Sterntal. Everything is about wine over here. ...

If we walk along the historical main street of Villány, there are many opportunities for wine tasting and great gastrocomical experiences. It we go to visit, its worth it to stay for a few days, because there is lots to do and see in the area. First off, there's all that wine we have to taste! It's practical not to go to more than three wineries in a day because you may not remember much after that. Most of the larger wineries will gladly show you where they process their wine and their cellars, but its a good idea to call in advance to make extra sure. In the smaller wineries, many times you will meet the vintner, which also is a great opportunity.

But first of all, you need to make sure you have a place to stay. It can happen in Villány that during the weekend or during some kind of festival or event like harvest, pentecost, St. Martin's Day, that you won't find any free rooms. Its a smart idea to make reservations in advance, but it there are still no rooms available, then look around in the surrounding areas. You'll definately find rooms in the nearby Harkány, just 15 minutes away by car. Of course, the wine region is bigger than just Villány. There is also a lot to see Siklós.

Definately go to see Villánykövesd and Palkonyára and walk along the row of cellars built into the hillside. There are great photos opportunities of old cellars, rustic doors, and simply beautiful views of the surrounding lakes. If you have even more time, there are opportunities for bicycling, hiking, carriage rides, horseback riding, and fishing. In Harkány you can enjoy thermal baths, and if you crave a good pizza, check out Holywood Pizzeria and try Antonio's pizza. After that, indulge and go have ice cream across the street. It's the best ice cream! In the neighboring Siklós, take a trip to the castle, where, by the way, there is also a wine museum. In the nearby Máriagyűd you can go to the famous church and if you're uop to it, from here you can take a hike on Tenkes-Hegy.

And if you're in the area, just a few minutes away Tenkes Csárda restaurant.A real "csárda" atmosphere with a great menu. This restaurant is amoung Hungary's 100 best restaurants. Their goose liver, soups and paprikash dishes are absolutely heavenly. We higly recommend this restaurant!

For those who like taking a walk in natrue, we have a few more programs to recommend in the area. South of Harkány you'll find the Duna Dráva National Park. On a river boat trip departing from Drávaszabolcs, you can take in the beautiful views of the banks.
If you're in the mood for mountain climbing, then west of Villány is Szársomlyó Mountain where this is a great opportunity. At the eastern foot of the hill, by the Nagyharsányi statue park begins the route and along the ridge of the mountain you can reach the top where a beautifual veiw awaits overlooking the whole region. And if the weather is good, you'll even meet paragliders here.
And if you're craving a little culture or have the urge to shop, then just a half hour away is Pécs. Here many fun programs, museums, theaters, movies, and exhibits await.
